Alberto V. Ramos Ruiz is a film critic and Programming Director of La Habana -  Festival of New Latin American Cinema. His coverage of festivals like Cannes, Berlin and Toronto appear regularly at the SIGNIS website (www.signis.net). He was also a contributor to the "Dictionary of Iberoamerican Film: Spain, Portugal and America" (2011). He currently teaches Latin American Cinema in the San Antonio de los Baños International Film and TV School and has served in international juries at the following festivals: San Sebastian, Venice, Havana, Zanzibar (SIGNIS), Berlin, Montreal (ecumenical), Rotterdam, Berlin, Havana, Fribourg, Mannheim (FIPRESCI), Olhar de Cinema, Hot Docs  (official jury).

Current issues

Mythical figures and images from the worlds of culture, sport and politics formed the subject matter of some of the films screened at DocFest Sheffield 2026. Peter Paul Huth explores them.
The extent to which the documentary film has evolved was once again evident this year at DocFest Sheffield (10–15 June 2026). The classic ideal of Direct Cinema or Cinéma Vérité has given way to a wide variety of cinematic possibilities. Report by Peter Paul Huth.
