Eleven-year-old Maria's little brother dies of cancer. The girl withdraws completely and her mother no longer looks after her. Her father struggles to keep the family together. Then Maria meets Jacob, a boy of the same age, but with a completely different demeanour. He is cheerful, exciting, spontaneous and far ahead of his age with his wisdom. Little by little, he brings Maria back to life and makes her take far-reaching decisions.
