Opening film: "Growth of the Soil"
On 9 October, the 2026 Warsaw International Film Festival opened with the Norwegian-Danish feature film *Growth of the Soil* (original title: *Markens Grøde*) by Hans Petter Moland, an adaptation of Knut Hamsun’s 1917 novel. The film tells the story of the establishment of a farm and a family under adverse circumstances in a remote region of Norway.
The festival comprises an international competition, a competition for first and second films, a documentary and a short film competition, as well as a number of side sections such as “Animus. Cinema of Values”, featuring films that explore universal values. The Ecumenical Jury awards its prize to a film from the international competition.
