Following Isabel Perón’s removal from office in 1976 and the government take-over by a military junta under the leadership of General Jorge Videla, the “Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo” began meeting regularly, from April 1977 onwards, to voice their protest. In October of the same year, their example was followed by the “Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo”. These women were searching for their grandchildren. These were children whose parents had been abducted or whose mothers had given birth to them in military jails. For many of them, it is a search that still continues today. (Festival information)
