Hellfire: A Journey from Hiroshima

1986

Together with cameraman Michael Camerini and a Japan specialist, James MacDonald, John Junkermann shows the life and work of Japanese artists Iri and Toshi Maruki. The Marukis travelled to Hiroshima in 1945, a few hours after the bomb fell. This hellish scene, of which they became spectators, resulted in their lifelong work of depicting the consequences and aftermath for the people of Hiroshima. Their colour and ink murals of scenes from Hiroshima and their growing commitment to peace have brought them international fame.
