International Short Film Festival Oberhausen

Founded in 1954 by Hilmar Hoffmann, Oberhausen is the oldest short film festival of the world. In 1962, the "Oberhausen Manifesto" by young German film makers, with Alexander Kluge among others, flagged the beginnings of the New German Film. Cultural policy interventions remained a hallmark of the festival. Since 1997, festival director Lars Henrik Gass is in charge of the festival. A Catholic (since 1963) and a Protestant jury (since 1964) were merged into an Ecumenical Jury in 2000.
